Chapter Fifteen

Whether she paused again to catch her breath or let the news sink in, I had no clue, but after a moment of stunned silence, she continued, “And surprise, surprise…investigators found a sizable rock next to the body, covered in blood. The police are hoping some of it was transferred from the assailant when he wielded the blows.”

Blows? I mouthed to a wide-eyed Leah, as Decker prattled on.

“Anyway, they’ve kicked me from the scene, but while I’m here I’m gonna see what else I can find out about this homeless guy, maybe talk to a few of the others he hangs with, see if I can get a line on him or find out where he hangs during the day. I think we should plan to meet up at Destiny’s later, once she opens for business. I’ll probably be a few minutes behind you but just so we’re on the same page, let’s hold off on telling her about Cam, if you’re cool with that?”

I was curious about her rationale but she seemed to have something on her mind or had a better understanding of the situation and the bar owner, so Anna agreed.

It was hard to fathom that Destiny’s bar would be closed for business. I couldn’t recall a time I’d felt the need to drink before noon. And suddenly, the only thing that made any sense was a good stiff cocktail—or maybe a few of them, so that I could forget the past twenty-four hours altogether.

Leah turned to Anna after Decker disconnected. “You’re the boss, how do you want to play this?”

“We proceed as discussed with Decker.” Anna gripped the wheel and punched the accelerator, propelling us forward as she shifted lanes and pressed through the sea of metal.

“What about Blaze?” I murmured.

Anna shrugged but continued to accelerate, whipping past a massive semi before tucking in front. “He’s safer where he is. For now.”

She must have caught something in my expression because after glancing at me, she added, “I don’t think he had anything to do with Cam’s death, but his actions as of late have been beyond reckless and childish.” She released a breath, shaking her head. “And despite the fact I want nothing more than to throttle him right now, the truth is, the more time we spend focusing on him, the more time the real culprit is able to get away with murder. No, Blaze is a big boy and can take care of himself. Let’s focus on what’s important now.”

I squeezed her arm. “Are you sure the two of you will be okay?”

She grasped my hand and offered a small smile as she gently squeezed back. “Don’t worry about Blaze and me. Finding the killer has to be our priority, which means, for the time being, everything else needs to wait. Then, when all of this is over if there is no longer any ‘two of you,’ I think both of us will survive.”

I nodded. “Okay, you got us out here—tell us—what we can do?”

Anna released a small, sad chuckle.
